Plaza Botero

Plaza Botero

One of the most popular spots in Medellin is Botero Plaza, which is next to the Palacio de la Cultura.

There are over a dozen huge bronze sculptors by Medellin’s most famous and most loved artist, Botero, who is famous worldwide for his artistic renderings of “fat people”. Botero says that he doesn’t paint fat people, but he paints figures more voluminously. You’ll notice that they don’t actually look fat… they’re just bigger in some areas. In any case, his unusual and very distinctive style has made him very famous and his pieces are collected worldwide. Botero currently lives in Rome, Italy.

On the other side of the Plaza, opposite the Palacio, is the Botero Museum, which has several rooms of his paintings, as well as other wings of the museum containing works of abstract art and many Colombian historical paintings.

One of the most spectacular places in Medellin is the El Parque Explora, which consists of many exhibits centered around a courtyard full of robotic rubber dinosaurs. They are life-size dinosaurs, animated, and you can touch and play with them. A few of them have erratically swinging rubber tails that the kids love to dodge.

Most of the most popular dinosaurs are on display, including a life-size anamatronic Tyrannousaurus Rex, a Triceratops, velociraptors, brachiasaurus, and many more.

Parque Explora Biologico

One of the best exhibitions within Parque Explora is the Biologico Exhibit, which features rainforest creatures from throughout Colombia.

Included in the exhibit is this golden poison dart frog shown above, which is the world’ most venemous frog.

Several species of tarantulas, including truly huge ones, are living here as well.

A medium sized boa, and a huge anaconda, along with many other beautiful snakes, are among the favorites of the crowd.

metro-cable-medellin

Metro Cable Medellin

High above the city of Medellin is the Metro Cable, which connects to the city’s metro/subway line.

We recommend buying a ticket for the regular metro, then ride to the Metro Cable and ride it up to the top to take photos of the city, then ride it back down.

The Metro Cable isn’t just a tourist attraction… it’s an important mode of transportation for thousands of the citizens of Medellin who live high up in the hills overlooking the city. So, best to ride it before rush hour.
