Medellin Aquarium (El Acuario)

The amazing aquarium in Medellin is part of the Parque Explora in the center of Medellin.  It’s known to be the best aquarium in South America, and has both freshwater and saltwater sections.

Most or all of the aquatic species displayed here are from Colombia itself, which is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries because it’s an evolutionary melting pot between North America and South America. Colombia spans the continent and so it has both Caribbean and Pacific species, both of which are represented in the Medellin Aquarium.

Some of the most spectacular species shown include the spectacular lionfish, river piranhas, clownfish swimming within the tentacles of stinging anemones, rays, and a very spectacular tank with a sculpted river tree root system.

We highly recommend this as it’s also included in the price of admission of the Parque Explora, which has lifestyles animatronic dinosaurs for kids to play on, and many other spectacular exhibits.

Festival of Lights in Medellin

Festival of Lights in Medellin

Medellin is sometimes referred to as “The City of Lights” and this is never more true than during the Christmas and New Years season (usually the last three weeks of December and the first week of January).

During this time, the entire city has hundreds of spectacular light displays in public parks, which are made anew each year, and the people of Medellin, as well as tourists, are roaming around or cruising by in cars and buses to spectate.

Los Alumbrados de Medellin, as it’s known in Spanish, is one of the best times of the year to visit Medellin. The weather is near perfect every day. Never too hot, and never too cold, and very little rain.
